Still, they got the essential Springsteen message across - that we just might get through these hard times together, if we continue to believe in an America where, as "Land of Hope and Dreams" puts it, "dreams will not be thwarted" and "faith will be rewarded."

For two hours and 40 minutes Springsteen poured out the passion, electrifying a full house with a concert that was equal parts frat house party, spiritual journey, boisterous rock'n'roll rumble and Southern tent revival.

But with James Brown gone, Bruce wants to be crowned the hardest-working man in show business. The calluses on his throat, bruises on his knees and his sweat-drenched front row prove he’s leading contender for the title. Maybe not president, but rock ’n’ roll’s Mr. Dynamite for sure.

A return to a sacred venue and solid Boss territory, the WOAD tour has continued with back to back shows from the LA Sports Arena, probably most famous for Springsteen's legendary August 1981 performance for the Vietnam Veterans. To be sure, Springsteen and company provided plenty of deeply felt music Wednesday, but he delivered something more earthbound: a much-needed message of optimism to counter the daily doses of grim news bombarding us.

If Obama decides the time is right for an inspiration czar, Springsteen would be the logical person to step up and proclaim, "I'm your man."

Springsteen has an immense power as a performer, an uncanny mix of blue-collar bravado and star power. He was surrounded by almost a dozen of his longtime players (including Patti Scialfa) but he was rarely out of focus.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band open Tour in San Jose

The Working on a Dream tour has opened at the HP Pavillion Center San Jose, with a set list featuring 6 titles from the recently released album of the same name. A 26 song set list clocks in at just under 2 hours 40 minutes, a long set by recent opening night/early tour performances of previous years.

The set is populated by 2 cover versions 'Good Rocking Tonight', and Hard Times (Come Again No More.) The main set opens with the classic 'Badlands and closes with 'Born to Run', 2 of the landmark songs in Springsteen's near 40 years as a recording artist. Clearly not content to dismiss the issues of the day, a strong 3pack of Seeds/Johnny 99 and The Ghost of Tom Joad, focus matters on the everyday struggle as recession bites globally.

Miami Steve Hints at tour extension

With the start of the Working on A Dream world tour just hours away, E Street Band member Steve Van Zandt has hinted at further dates, after the run of European Shows ends in August. In an Interview for Billboard, Little Steven is reported as saying "I would think there's a bit more than that. I gotta believe we're gonna (tour) until at least Thanksgiving or Christmas, somehow, somewhere. I hope so. I hope we take a month off and then go back out."

Also there is no problems expected in the absence of Max Weinberg. Van Zandt goes on,"I think it's gonna be fine," said Van Zandt, who produced the new album by Norway's the Cocktail Slippers, "St. Valentine's Day Massacre," due out April 28. "And knowing Max, he's not going to miss much... Conan has been absolutely terrific about this...I don't think we thank him often enough. Max is a big part of that show, and for (O'Brien) to just say, 'Go whenever you feel like it,' I mean, Jesus, how nice. So we'll see."
