Grab your suitcase and your ticket...........Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band ready to conquer Europe

33 years after leaving the United States for the first time, the worlds greatest rock performer in tow with the worlds greatest ever rock band, will set out this week on a 23 date European Tour.

The 7th tour of Europe follows on from visits in 1975, 1981, 1985, 1988, 1999, 2002/2003, and comes in support of Springsteen's latest studio album released in October of 2007 called Magic.

At 57 years of age, and with one of rock music's best loved bands to boot, Bruce Springsteen remains the greatest rock star of his, or perhaps any other generation, and the social commentator extraordinaire for his country, he continues to reach just that little higher, and aim higher than all of his contempories, and at a time when popular music and indeed popular culture appears to last all of 5 minutes, and is all together disposable, its time again for perhaps the last great american hero to remind us of the joy, and the healing power, that just one night in this man's company can bring.

A light goes out on E Street.........Danny Federici passes after long illness

For over 40 years, Danny Federici was to the side of Bruce Springsteen, they as Bruce has noted 'grew up together' and shared the rise of Springsteen as an artist and american cultural icon over a journey of 40 years.

Federici played in numerous Springsteen bands in the early years, before being entrusted with keyboard duties, with a band that would rise to one of rocks greatest ever bands, over the years Federici was a staple member of a band that to their legions of fans worldwide seemed indestructable, fans were right to cherish the bond that the E Street Band would create, a band, and an institution born out of friendship as well as musical talent, to that part Danny Federici's part was immense.

His contribution to Springsteen's music should not be taken lightly, the crushing keyboards on Hungry Heart (still the best pop song ever) the haunting work on Your Missing, as well as the sound of the boardwalk, and Asbury Park, forever in legend, on Sandy.

The Long Walk Home is sorry to learn of Danny's Passing, but is pleased to post links to a website where donations can be made in Danny's memory. Im also pleased to post some of the great comments made about Danny from those on E Street, and from farther afield.

QUOTES

Danny and I worked together for 40 years - he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician. I loved him very much ... we grew up together

QUOTES

He was a much more advanced musician than most of us at the time, and he raised the bar for all of us. It was embarrassing to hear how good he already was and to listen to your own pitiful efforts

Bruce Springsteen endores Barack Obama

For years a committed Democrat, who in 2004 lead the Vote for Change tour that endeavoured to register millions of new voters, and having publicly supported John Kerry, Bruce Springsteen has endorsed Barack Obama for the next President of the United States.

Dear Friends and Fans:
LIke most of you, I've been following the campaign and I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest.
He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next President. He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where "...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone."
At the moment, critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships. While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision, so well described in his excellent book, Dreams From My Father, often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our Constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment.
After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken. I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.
Over here on E Street, we're proud to support Obama for President.

It's an experience that has been well-documented for more than three decades. It's long, joyous, poignant and a shared experience. It has its own language.
Eras of excess and irony have done little to change what he does. Being Bruce Springsteen means being impervious to minor criticisms and ``major'' trends. It means no concessions to fashion, musical or otherwise. He exists in a place of his own creation. Then he invites us over for his shindigs. Andrew Dansby Houston Chronicle

But that kind of dissertation is out there – Google away. I'm as bored with such academic displays as I am accounts of overcome first-time encounters. (To those of you who just experienced your first Boss bash and are looking for validation of your joyously overcome feelings: Yes, we know. Pretty incredible, huh? Oh, and yes, he's almost always this amazing. Sometimes more.) What's worth discussing, actually, is how this great gig (one of his best local shows this decade) matters in nascent Bruce-in-O.C. lore. For remember: Monday's and Tuesday's concerts, his first stops here in nearly eight years, also rank as only his third and fourth full-blown performances in our fair county in almost four decades of touring

Through it all, the E Street Band's leader resembled a guy on a work site, slinging authoritative instructions to co-workers who seemed supercharged just to be at work. And why wouldn't they? All night, the man in charge, no matter if he was strutting across the stage or skipping, was grinning as far as his 58-year-old face would allow.

It’s the mix of clear-eyed realism and unshakable hope that gave the best songs of the night their power. That union reached its fullest expression in the rollicking Irish jig “American Land,” an ode to the generations of immigrants who “worked to bones and skin” to build the nation into what it is.

There was plenty of "Magic," but those tunes are familiar now. The oldies were heavy on crowd favorites that were heard last time, including "She's the One" and "Badlands." "Backstreets" and a requested "Jungleland" were Sunday treats. The music was a balance of pensive and populist, a discussion of dreams and dashed hopes but with a dose of Springsteenian optimism

The 58-year-old Springsteen is aging well, and by that I don't mean he's acting like Donovan, a flowered relic from a gone, daddy, gone age. As he's matured, Springsteen has carried his audience — 11,500 on this night — with him.

Much of Springsteen's 23-song set, though, was about what happens when reality overtakes dreams. He sounded a note of walled-off desperation on "The River," and tried to make sense of crumbling love on "Loose Ends." He reprised the chilling, bone-weary political allegory "Magic," with Soozie Tyrell adding mournful violin and harmony vocals, and murmured about a power both seductive and dark on "Devil's Arcade."

Springsteen and his longtime band were simply great, performing a well-considered set with heightened intensity and a very clear sense of purpose... Springsteen remains one of the most potent live performers in popular music -- largely because he's among the most committed practitioners of the form, draining all of his creative energy every time he's onstage."
